Meet the Past and Shape the Future!
Are you a stay-at-home mom who wants to update her resume? Maybe you're a high school student looking for work experience before you apply for your first job? Seniors, teens, families, corporate and civic groups all have a place at the Heritage Farm Museum.

You must be 14 years or older, have an interest in serving your community and a desire to learn. We provide a job description, training and a schedule.

Volunteer Job Descriptions:


SUMMER TEEN APPRENTICE
Looking for a constructive way for your teen to spend time this summer and gain valuable workplace skills? Then apply to participate in the Heritage Farm Museum's Summer Teen Apprentice volunteer opportunity.

Selected students will experience different aspects of museum work from maintaining the gallery and grounds, animal care, basic front-line customer service, data entry, gift shop maintenance, and special events. Training is provided and mandatory orientation sessions for selected applicants will be held on Saturday, June 7th 10 am to 12 noon or Sunday, June 8th 10 am to 12 noon.

Student volunteers must be at least 14 years old by July 2008. We ask for 3 - 6 hours per week time commitment.

PROGRAM ASSISTANT
Be a program assistant or instructor for Standards-of-Learning based school and Scout programs in our new interactive exhibit hall.

These positions are a perfect way to learn about the history of our area while gaining valuable experience developing and teaching educational programs. Programs include: Farmin' Fever, Apples, Apples Everywhere, Weights and Measures and a variety of Scout badge and achievement projects. Ask us about internships for college and graduate school students; paid positions also available for qualified applicants.

OUTREACH AMBASSADOR
Attend local fairs, festivals, school and scout events to promote the museum. Spread the word in the community about this unique local museum. Duties include set-up and manning of information table and distribution of museum materials. Great way to learn about our community and have fun in the process.


GALLERY TECHNICIAN
Want to see behind the scenes? Work with museum staff on gallery planning and maintenance. Assist with daily operations in the exhibit hall. Participate in program and special event preparation, as well as facility monitoring.


CUSTOMER SERVICE ASSISTANT
The customer service assistant creates the first impression for museum visitors. Assist with front desk operations and guest services by greeting and orienting visitors, answering phones and light administrative work. Learn about the Museum and Claude Moore Park and share your knowledge with our guests. Regular shifts available.



SPECIAL EVENTS ASSISTANT
Adults, teens, family and corporate volunteers are needed to assist with set-up, clean-up, hands-on activities, as well as greeting and orienting visitors. Orientation and training required.


GARDEN ASSISTANT

Help plant and maintain the Museum's landscape and gardens. Interest in historic plants, native Virginia plants, grasses, and fruit trees. Experience with tools and plants helpful.
(Seasonal: March through October)


INTERNSHIPS


Exhibit Intern:

Work with the museum curator to help determine the face of our gallery in the upcoming year. Design and implement exhibits in our interactive exhibit area. Work within budgets and be the curator for a temporary educational exhibit. $500 stipend available for a minimum of 120 hours service.


Archival Intern:

With the help of the curator, the intern will be responsible for the reorganization and of the museum archives. Intern will be responsible for identifying, processing, and cataloging sections of the museum archives. Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in History, Public History, Library Science, Museum Studies or related field and at least one year of graduate study to apply. Intern will receive a stipend of $500 for a minimum of 120 hours service.


Collections Intern:

Inventory and re-house our permanent collections. Create condition reports and inventory databases. Develop conservation strategies and storage solutions for artifacts accessioned into the museum collection. Applicants must have a Bachelor's degree in History, Public History, Library Science, Museum Studies or related field and at least one year of graduate study to apply. Intern will receive a stipend of $500 for a minimum of 120 hours service.

Seniors! Join RSVP, The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, one of the largest volunteer efforts in the nation, provides an opportunity for individuals ages 55 and older to utilize their skills, life experience and fulfill the desire to help their community.
