Authentic artifacts are mixed with hands-on activities in a recreation of a farm kitchen before electricity and running water. In the Kitchen is made possible by generous contributions from the community. Over the past three years, the Museum’s not for profit-advisory board, LHFM, Inc. Board rallied the community to secure the donation of a turn-of-the-century Hoosier cabinet, a wood burning stove, and various kitchen furniture and cooking implements. In addition, Board members raised money to purchase an icebox and to complete exhibit fabrication. The Museum’s corps of volunteers donated canned goods, sewed linens, and volunteered their time to stage the exhibit and prepare it for opening day.  According to Museum Curator and project coordinator Katie Jones of Reston, “The completion of the exhibit is only the beginning.  We have the opportunity to offer new Standards of Learning based programming that explores the role of women on the farm and present topics such as rural electrification in Northern Virginia.” The Museum looks forward to offering new programs and events for schools, Scouts and visitors in 2010 and is actively seeking community input and support. Please visit our website at www.heritagefarmmuseum.org for information on how you can volunteer as a museum interpreter, teach a class as an instructor, or donate items to the exhibit.
