John Janney

School

John attended a school run by the Quaker community. He started school when he was six and continued until he was fourteen. Joh says hat the number of students was around 70 and describes the school as a room with a double row of desks. Students had to supply their own books, paper and lead pencils. One teacher taught different age groups a variety of classes.

In the early years, students were taught reading, writing and math. Students were taught a variety of lessons on the money system, weights, and land measurements. John says he wasn't taught geography until he was twelve. At fourteen he studied advanced grammar. John became the only student, during the time of his enrollment, to learn algebra.
