Going to Market

Markets were in Georgetown, Baltimore and Alexandria. The Janney's wagon was pulled by four horses and carried food and water for both the men and horses. Depending on the roads, the wagon could hold 12-14 barrels of flour. At night the horses were unhitched and tied to the wheels of the wagon. Occasionally the Janney's would spend the night at the tavern located on Leesburg Pike or in Alexandria or Georgetown.

Trips to Alexandria were made shortly after butchering season to deliver hogs to market. Judging from Janney's account, it took two days to get to Alexandria, one day to buy and sell goods and probably another two days to get home.
